A programme of pioneering composers, built round Gloria Coates’s Piano Quintet, premiered by the Kreutzers in Munich in 2015. The Quartet’s two-decade collaboration with Coates has resulted in many premieres and an acclaimed recordings of all her quartets, piano trio, violin concerto and solo violin sonata. Ives and Crawford Seeger’s quartets are both ground-breaking works; it’s impossible to think of the work of Ligeti or Carter without them, and they are balanced by the brilliant invention of Foss and Kirchner’s solo and duo.
